Thanks Em for that, I love an eco-rant every so often....it’s so important but something it;s so easy to forget in our day to day busyness. I just noticed on one of your links that it’s World Fair Trade day tomorrow (10th May)! So if anyone figured that out before I did and got your young people involved somehow, that’s great! If not and you’d like to know a bit more and what’s happening around the world tomorrow, follow this link.
Also just decided to turn this into a resource cos it looks like a great site. Find out more on the Resource Toolkit.

Thanks for your comment Wendy, we look forward to hearing about the things you’d like to share! God bless you in your work, Amy

Hi Andrea

If a good number are going to Uni (and any are christians?) they may like to know about things like Fusion, Fresh by UCCF and a new book that came out recently by Krish Kandiah called ‘Fresh’ publised by IVP and some we in Scripture Union have publised on making the change / going to Uni. see http://www.scriptureunion.org.uk/shop or let me know

Best wishes

Wayne Dixon

Yes, I agree with Rocky, great stuff. What is evident from your editorial Amy is how vivid your own experience still is of the time when secondary school came to a close for you .... that’s reminding me of that little parable of Jesus: every schoolswork editor / assembly volunteer who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a hospitable householder who brings out of her treasure, things old and new (Matt 13:52). Marvellous! Keep up the good work.
Bruce

We arrange assemblies in all 14 primaries and hand out It’s Your Move (1500). Some schools see it as just an assembly others build on this after we leave.
One school, the head writes each childs name in the booklet and we hand them out in person after assembly, they appreciate this personal touch.
During the assemblies we also have team members from our Secondary team and tell the year six’s to look out for them in their ‘new’ school. This is a great way of providing continuous spiritual care throughout the key stages (I had to use that phrase cause we love it, sorry)

Great stuff Amy. I particularly like your comment about giving young people a safe place to be heard. One of the biggest challenges we all face is being ridiculed or mocked when we are honest and transparent. Schools workers have such an important opportunity to show empathy and sensitivity to anyone who is struggling.

Rocky

I have started reading this book and have high lighted lots of valuable pointers I want to remember. Things I already knew but Nick puts into words so well. I am only two chapters in and loving it.

hi Guys

I have been a member for a while and each time I go to leave a comment I get side tracked by all the amazing tips and stories on the site.
Thanks for all the exciting and inspiring resources.
I am keen to get started using some of them and sharing some of the new ones I have used over the past year or so.

Great stuff Amy, Mark.
It’s good - even from this distance from Australia - to “see” schoolswork entering into the life of young students and sharing in their education. That was what struck me from the interview ... here you are as mentors, as encouragers on the road that it times is rather hard and grueling, as those who have been through it making sure you don’t forget how you experienced it, and learning how a new generation is coming through and confronting life in this world that God loves so much ... I could go on and on but I’ll leave it for an email. Do keep up the good work. I’m watching and I’m interested to see how this develops ...

escape from exam-mania

Friday 2nd May, 2008 in: Secondary, 16+ by Amy Stock
TAGS: space, relaxation,

For the year 11s in the school I visit, there are only 5 more days of school before they break for their study leave. I know each school does this differently, but May signals the start of exam season for many young people we come into contact with. My question is how can we encourage young people to keep focused and not panicked; to make sure they look after themselves, and all those other things it’s easy for them to forget about?

I’m working with a young person who is one outbreak away from expulsion and I’m expected to perform a miracle. Whilst this may be possible theologically, faith permitting, I’m probably not going to deliver as completely reformed a character as the school wishes. Seeing the brilliant person behind the behaviour is only making it an even taller order. Thankfully our team book this term is Working with Anger and Young People...maybe God’s already underway!
