The Egg Trick

January 10, 2010 by Amy Tolmie

In January's Youthwork Magazine, the favourite schoolswork resource was all about using eggs in assembly. We've done a short film to illustrate his trick here, which is quite simply standing on eggs without breaking them.

January 03, 2010 by Amy Tolmie

In January's Youthwork Magazine we featured a resource that fits really well in a January assembly. It explores the idea of what it means to be on an adventure using the Pixar film UP, and the accompanying slideshow is here for you to download.

Secondary Age Playing Cards

December 03, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

The playing cards featured at Youthwork the Conference 2009 are now available to buy online. The idea is to have a resource that you can carry around with you that is ready to use, fun, interactive and ideal for getting discussions going with the young people you meet. Whether it's about how often you brush your teeth, whether the world would be a better place if we all spoke the same language or what God would be like if he came to your town in 2009, there will be plenty of questions to get your young people talking!

Playing card tricks explained

November 25, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

We launched our new playing card resource at Youthwork the Conference last weekend in Eastbourne. A third of the all those at the conference went home with their own pack of cards, and were asking about how to do some of the card tricks we were doing on the stand. We only learnt the tricks a couple of days before the conference, and are really simple to do once you know how, but can look very impressive! We've found they are a great way to raise intrigue and curiosity in young people and is the perfect context to get conversation and interesting discussions going.

Not what my school can do for me...

September 08, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

The closing reflection to the assembly featured in the September Youthwork Magazine is now available. Using an idea from JFK's inaugral speech in 1961, it helps pupils think about what they can give to their schools this year. Based on the famous line "not what your country can do for you, what can you do for your country?", we ask students to consider 'not what your school can do for you, what can you do for your school?'.

Schoolswork Examen

July 03, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

As we come to the end of term, here is an examen designed to help you reflect back on the school year, with all of its challenges and joys, risks and responsibilities. The examen is a simple spiritual exercise developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola in the Sixteenth Century. The simplest form of the examen consists of two questions: For what moment am I most grateful? For what moment am I least grateful?

Pilgrimage board game

June 27, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

This month's Youthwork mag features a game idea based on the Pilgrim's Progress. Uploaded here is a pdf* of the game, along with the original lesson plan and worksheet.

*the pdf is a scanned copy of the original hand-drawn game board, and is sized at the original A2. You may need to reduce it to A3 to print, unless you have a way of printing on A2 (which would make the game easier to play).
