Respect: a logo for RE

May 26, 2010 by Amy Tolmie

June's Youthwork Magazine featured some ideas for a lesson on 'loving your neighbour', encouraging ideas about how to respect others from other backgrounds and faiths. There was a link at the end to this website: www.natre.org.uk/spiritedarts, which is running a competition again this summer on several different themes. One of those is 'Respect: a logo for RE'. An example of the artwork from the 2004 competition is below.

Here is the winning entry to a previous competition on 'Design an RE logo' by 12 year old Robin.

Pilgrimage board game

June 27, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

This month's Youthwork mag features a game idea based on the Pilgrim's Progress. Uploaded here is a pdf* of the game, along with the original lesson plan and worksheet.

*the pdf is a scanned copy of the original hand-drawn game board, and is sized at the original A2. You may need to reduce it to A3 to print, unless you have a way of printing on A2 (which would make the game easier to play).

In the March 2009 we featured a lesson on Easter Emotions, helping students engage with the themes and emotions that the disciples experienced in the Holy week. Here is the downloadable presentation to accompany the lesson.

Instant animated movies

January 08, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

xtranormal is a new site that lets you create animated movies without any previous experience! Basically, you type in what you want characters to say, choose what they'll look like and where the caerma will be and, before you know it, there's a movie! I think has two real possibilities: one is giving young people the chance to make a movie as part of a project in, say, an RE lesson. The other is making movies that you can use in a presentation during a lesson or assembly. The site has plenty of examples of movies that have already been created and, whilst it's not Pixar, the look is quite impressive. With a little practice you could put together something very cool. Have a go and see what you think!

Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

December 08, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

I am yet to see this film, but have it on good authority of the Curtis that it is one worth watching and using in your work with young people. So, the wonderful people at Youth Specialities have once again blessed us with their creativity and put together a study guide based on the film, free to download from their website.

Is there a God

September 16, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

Rose Fisher is 13. As part of an RE lesson she was asked to write a poem on the topic of 'Is there a God'. Her work was so profound and moving that it was published, together with other poems from young people, in a book called 'Spirited Poetry'. It's a fantastic resource that will make a huge impact in assemblies or lessons. Showing students other people's work will often get them thinking on a much deeper level themselves.

So here's Rose's poem:

Where is God?
Rose Fisher Age 13

God's in the snowflake that melted
But not in the snowball you threw
She's in the midnight shadow that might
Have been there if the cloud only moved

God is in the words of the story
But not in the book's printed page
She's in every word that was shouted
But more in what you never dared say

God lives in the living fur's touch
But not in the leather punk boots
He is in the cool stars of midnight
But more in the dawn's golden fruits

God's in the first fair trade chocolate
But not in the millionth Kit-Kat
She's in the succulent pork meat
But more in Quorn. That's a fact!

God's not always in my heart
Or even in my head
But God can be there every step of the way
Even when he's just one step ahead

Capital Punishment resources

September 08, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

Capital punishment often gets discussed as a moral choice in Year 10 or 11 RE. Nick Yarris' story is a brilliant way into the debate, highlighting how easily an innocent person can be caught up in the system

Wing Clips

September 05, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

We spoke about this fab site on the blog back in November last year, but it hasn't made it onto the Resource Toolkit until now. WingClipsâ„¢ can be downloaded to use in your church, school or other non-profit organisation for FREE!

Stories of the Saints

September 01, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

In September's Youthwork magazine we featured a resource called Stories of the Saints. This was designed for a KS4 RE lesson, but could also be adapted for any setting. To help you tell the stories of three saints (Simeon the Stylite, Francis of Assisi and Genovetta Torres), here is a simple keynote presentation. There is a reflection to complete the lesson, which involves a set of statements which you can also download here in pdf format.

Responding to suffering

June 02, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

Here is an outline of a lesson a schools worker in Luton recently did for a Yr.11 group. It worked really well with the particular group she was working with, and this one is the third in the series of three lessons. I will also get the first one up as soon as!

Earlier on this year, Tearfund and Scripture Union joined forces to develop a brilliant resource aimed at school Christian groups. It has been developed to help those groups raise money to fight HIV around the world.
