Not what my school can do for me...

September 08, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

The closing reflection to the assembly featured in the September Youthwork Magazine is now available. Using an idea from JFK's inaugral speech in 1961, it helps pupils think about what they can give to their schools this year. Based on the famous line "not what your country can do for you, what can you do for your country?", we ask students to consider 'not what your school can do for you, what can you do for your school?'.

Here's a new DVD resource called 'The taylormation Toolbox'. It contains 8 short, moral based films designed to be used as ice breakers and focal points either in a school assembly, church service or youth work. It comes with a free teaching pack and works with the SEAL scheme and different Key Stages. See the site for more information.

Instant animated movies

January 08, 2009 by Amy Tolmie

xtranormal is a new site that lets you create animated movies without any previous experience! Basically, you type in what you want characters to say, choose what they'll look like and where the caerma will be and, before you know it, there's a movie! I think has two real possibilities: one is giving young people the chance to make a movie as part of a project in, say, an RE lesson. The other is making movies that you can use in a presentation during a lesson or assembly. The site has plenty of examples of movies that have already been created and, whilst it's not Pixar, the look is quite impressive. With a little practice you could put together something very cool. Have a go and see what you think!

Coin Trick

December 16, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

In the latest Youthwork Magazine we gave you some ideas to use in assemblies based on money. There are loads of themes you can draw out of these, or purely use them for fun, but here's the vid demonstrating the coin trick and an explanation of how it's done.

Is there a God

September 16, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

Rose Fisher is 13. As part of an RE lesson she was asked to write a poem on the topic of 'Is there a God'. Her work was so profound and moving that it was published, together with other poems from young people, in a book called 'Spirited Poetry'. It's a fantastic resource that will make a huge impact in assemblies or lessons. Showing students other people's work will often get them thinking on a much deeper level themselves.

So here's Rose's poem:

Where is God?
Rose Fisher Age 13

God's in the snowflake that melted
But not in the snowball you threw
She's in the midnight shadow that might
Have been there if the cloud only moved

God is in the words of the story
But not in the book's printed page
She's in every word that was shouted
But more in what you never dared say

God lives in the living fur's touch
But not in the leather punk boots
He is in the cool stars of midnight
But more in the dawn's golden fruits

God's in the first fair trade chocolate
But not in the millionth Kit-Kat
She's in the succulent pork meat
But more in Quorn. That's a fact!

God's not always in my heart
Or even in my head
But God can be there every step of the way
Even when he's just one step ahead

What Winning Looks Like

September 12, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

This month's Youthwork magazine resource is an assembly looking at what it means to win. Use these pictures to help the young people imagine what it looks like to win something, before using pictures or examples from them or even their teachers!

End of year assembly slides

July 16, 2008 by Amy Tolmie

As mentioned on the community blog, I did an assembly this week using a couple of very simple slides for an end of term assembly, but I thought I'd post them up here just in case they're useful for anyone or inspire other thoughts. They include questions for students to use in reflecting back on their year that is just finishing.
You can download keynote or powerpoint...
