Christmas is coming...

I had my first exposure of Coca Cola's Christmas advert on TV last night, which, by the looks of various Twitter comments, seems to be a real sign that Christmas is on its way! We're starting to think about advent assemblies, Christmas assemblies and other ways that we can engage students in schools in exploring the story of Christmas in meaningful ways. Soon there will be new Christmas resources available for 2009 here on the site, but in the meantime, we want to get some discussion going here on the site and point out a couple of resources we really like.

It's the final day of Youthwork the Conference 2009 and another opportunity to learn some more card tricks with the new playing card resources we're featuring at the conference. Here's another trick for you. In a few days we'll reveal how to do these tricks so that you can use them with your young people, but for now, enjoy!

The cards are designed with a different discussion starter on each face, getting loads of conversations going with your young people. There's four different categories of questions:

DIAMOND: A question about you
SPADE: A question about others
HEART: A question about the world
CLUB: A question about beliefs playing cards trick 1 from on Vimeo.

We're having a great time at Eastbourne for Youthwork the Conference 2009. Over 1,000 youthworkers from across the UK and further have gathered for a weekend of refreshment, inspiration, challenge, and unbeknown to them, amazing card tricks too! SchoolsworkUK's newest resource is all about getting young people talking over a game of cards. The pack is full of discussion starters, and there'll be more chat to come later, but here's one of our favourite tricks we're doing today: playing cards trick 2 from on Vimeo.

Happy Monday schoolsworkers, here's a couple of links I saw over the weekend that I thought I'd pass on;

Rethink - amazing new website for young people... have a look, you will be happy you did.

Oh My God is a new film due to be released in November. The trailor is worth checking out, that alone could open up so many conversations, great stuff.

We're all Wild Things is a great article on the Relevant site based on the film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are. "How a 10-sentence book from our childhood shows us God's love in the face of our anger". Grab a coffee and read this!

Have a fabulous start to your week!

Training in Schools Work

Schools work is an increasingly significant area of youth and children's ministry. This residential course is designed for those new to schools work as well as those with some experience or who are working in schools as a part of a wider role as church-based youth or children's workers – both paid and unpaid. It is suitable for people working in primary or secondary schools. As well as thinking about the theological underpinning of schools work there will be practical sessions and the opportunity to gain new ideas and insights.

I've just got back from a week at Momentum (Soul Survivor's festival for young adults), talking about prayer in schools. I was there helping out with a prayer space called Orison, which is a really exciting prayer initiative designed for use in schools. "Orison is an interactive, spiritual experience which exists to encourage people of all ages to consider questions of spirituality and to engage with God through creative, hands-on prayer activities by working in conjunction with the National Curriculum Guidelines for Religious Education."

Check out more on their site here.

With activities ranging from bubble tubes to sand trays and mirrors, there are plenty of interactive ways of engaging children and young people in thinking about prayer. Coming soon on we'll be featuring some of the resources used in Orison and a bigger conversation about how and why we want to engage students thinking about prayer in schools.

Here's a link to the post I wrote last year at this time. When I'm back from school later I'm planning on updating this for 2009, but I know lots of us are looking for materials for end of term assemblies. Hope it's helpful!

Check this out. If you've been involved in the UK schools work scene for a while you may recall Schools Ministry Network (SMN), which existed for about ten years as a means of linking up and resourcing schools workers across the UK. SMN has been dormant for several years now and the signatories to its bank account have decided that now is the time to dispose of its remaining assets. There are details at

If you are involved with or know of a UK project involving networking between Christian schools workers that might be able to benefit from some of this money (no it's not millions!), please do look at the information on the site and consider making a bid. The closing date for applications is 31 August.

A2's (nearly) over - what now?

As A2's come to an end and many of our 18 year olds start to think about new beginnings at Uni in the autumn a couple of useful websites they maybe interested in knowing about and connecting with as they make the big change. From Fusion and UCCF (Universites and Colleges Christian Fellowship) ideas, links and encouragement to be part of a local supportive church and if appropriate link up with the Uni Christian Union.
