The Christmas / Easter Story – An Event For Year 6
Over the last 15 years I have been involved with Slough Baptist Church based on an initiative for local primary schools that has been very well received. My heart is to see it develop wider and I wanted to let you know about it for your information and action if you think appropriate.
The idea is that a local primary school visits a local Church for a morning or afternoon to focus on Christmas. The aim: To provide a warm welcome to the children and staff who attend and to communicate the story of Christmas or Easter. About 9000 pupils have seen one of these presentations since 1995. Recently I was talking with a 20 year old student from one of the schools who remembers in a positive light his visit to the Church and the impact the presentation had on him. We have also seen this event develop in other areas and at Christmas and/or Easter there were similar events in: Altrincham, Bath, Bedford, Brentwood, Bradford, Bristol, Carmarthen, Cheam, Edinburgh, Fleet, Glasgow, Gravesend, Hamilton & Blantyre, Heathrow, Hockley, Keighley, Lambeth, Leeds, Liverpool, Maidenhead, Milton Keynes, Reading, Newbury, Southport, Spen Valley, Sutton, Swindon, Virginia Water, Wales (Pontyclun), Walthamstow, Watford & Welwyn Garden City & Wokingham. Approx 30 locations – 200 schools – 11.000 pupils and these are just the ones I am aware of.
At Christmas and Easter in the past few months all 10 slots available were once again taken. Might this be something for YOUR Church and a school near you? If you would like to see it in action then I would like to invite you to come and see a session anytime from 30 November – 4 December. There are 2 opportunities each day (10.00-11.30am or 1.00 – 2.30pm).
If you are local and would like to visit then please do contact me letting me know when you would like to come. If those dates are not suitable but you would like to find out more about this event then again contact me and we can arrange a time to meet. See http://www.scriptureunion.org.uk/62365.id for other areas doing something similar which maybe more local to where you are.
An Easter presentation is also run in March and I am very keen to see if more Churches would like to use this as a tool of making / developing a contact with a primary school either at Christmas or Easter or both!! As a Schools Worker involved with secondary schools I regularly talk to teenagers who remember well their visit to a local church for one of these events.
Thank you for your time. Please pass this on to anyone else in the Church who might be interested in this. See www.sloughbaptistchurch.org.uk/schoolsweek for more information.
