Artcards Series 2

Monday 27th Feb, 2012 by Amy Stock

Categories: Primary, Schoolswork Plus, Schoolswork Plus

This resource is all about using art to open up big questions and ideas with children.

The pack comprises 12 high quality Artcards complete with stunning images based on questions by children that they have thought of to ask God. The cards are designed to unpack and dig deeper into the big ideas and questions that children have about the world around them and God.

The questions are grouped into four categories, and there will be a lesson pack (including the digital images) coming in the next few days.

The four categories are:
1. Questions about ‘creation’
2. Questions about ‘the world’
3. Questions about ‘wonder’
4. Questions about ‘knowing me’

On the back of each Artcard, are three sections: an idea, two questions and a task. This makes the resource very adaptable and usable for classroom settings, with the option of focusing on just one category per lesson, or for older students who can handle lots of different ideas, the option to include a variety of topics spread throughout the class to enable more varied and interesting conversations. More tips and ideas for lessons to come in the lesson pack very soon (watch this space for details).

Series 2 differs from series 1 in that it has been designed for a younger age group, primarily 7-13 year olds. Like any of our resources they can be adapted for any age group, however the pitch of the questions has been aimed at a younger audience than the first series.

Primary Age Playing Cards

Tuesday 23rd Nov, 2010 by Amy Stock

Categories: Primary, Schoolswork Plus, Schoolswork Plus

The new playing cards contain 52 brand new questions, and are geared towards the 7-13 yr old age group. This means they are suitable for use with the primary age group, middle schools and also in secondary schools with lower ability students.

Differences between these cards and the original orange cards include:

- Completely new questions
- Simpler language
- Larger font, making the questions easier to read

image

However, they still maintain the principle of using questions to open up conversation with humour and depth. The four suits also use the four different types of questions as the secondary ones do:

DIAMONDS: questions about you (e.g. identity)
SPADES: questions about others (e.g. friendships)
HEARTS: questions about the world (e.g. the environment, the world around us)
CLUBS: questions about beliefs (e.g. prayer, why we believe things - suitable for any age group and for those from any faith and none)

Here’s a quote from Lat Blaylock from RE Today talking about the cards:

You’ve got to have these cards: a playful approach to being spiritual. 52 little pieces of thoughtfulness in fours suits. Just what I expect from schoolswork – profound, and profoundly simple, fun, and funnily powerful. Get some.

Secondary Age Playing Cards

52 questions
4 themes
1 pack of cards

These playing cards came out of a situation with a young person who would only ever open up in a mentoring situation when there was a card game involved. It seemed obvious that to put questions onto the playing cards would be a perfect solution for this particular young person to open up about different areas of her life, and so this is our way of passing on an idea that has worked in lots of different settings in schools including:

• Group work
• Mentoring sessions
• Card tricks to use in the playground/dining hall
• Card games in a lunchtime or after school club
• If you need to fill a few minutes at the end of a lesson you’re taking, have some cards with you and divide up some appropriate questions between the students for them to discuss in groups

In all of these settings and more, discussion naturally flows from the questions that appear, whether it’s through a favourite card game, a trick, or just taking a card from the pack and seeing what happens. The questions are divided into four categories which correspond with the four different playing card suits:
DIAMONDS: questions about you
SPADES: questions about others
HEARTS: questions about the world
CLUBS: questions about beliefs.
If you want to see more pictures take a look at our facebook page here.

If you would rather purchase the cards by sending a cheque, please email your details including how many packs you would like and your address, to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Thanks, Amy

By Amy Stock on Wednesday 10th Nov, 2010

I have used the playing cards a couple of times in the extended day lesson I lead at my local Academy school on Tuesdays called TRUST. The last time I used them it created the opportunity for young people to share about what is going on in their lives.  Three of them shared some quite deep stuff from one of the questions on the cards. It was really encouraging to hear them share and open up.  I look forward to using the cards again soon. I highly recommend this resource.

Hi,

Is it possible if i get 5 packs of cards to mix and match secondary and primary school playing cards,

This was an excellent assembly resource. It’s jam packed with great visuals and info, so much so that you won’t be able to use everything in one assembly. I tweaked it slighty to suit the year group I was working with. I used a Third Day song called ‘Love Song’ and played it while they looked at the photos. Really wanted them to think about a particular line…‘just to be with you I gave everything, yes I gave my life away.’ Thank you for this fab resource

By Gillian on Monday 23rd Nov, 2009

That’s great Gillian, thanks for letting us know. We like Third Day too…good choice!

By Amy Stock on Wednesday 25th Nov, 2009

I used this brilliant resource last year in the end of term services for several different year groups. I was able to use all of the resources (slightly adapted) and they provided a powerful and engaging framework for sharing the message of Easter. Thank you so much for producing this resource and the excellent value it represents. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone else.

Schoolswork.co.uk Set

Tuesday 10th Mar, 2009 by Amy Stock

Categories: Primary, Secondary, 16+, Schoolswork Plus

The schoolswork.co.uk set is ideal if you work in both primary and secondary schools, or with mixed ability students. Both sets can be adapted to suit any age group, but the questions for the green (primary) set use simpler language and a bigger font, whereas the orange (secondary) set employs more complex ideas and a smaller sized font. Different questions are used in the separate packs.

Please see individual pack descriptions for more information: PRIMARY PACK / SECONDARY PACK

I’m surprised that you charge for the assembly!

By HannahRichards on Friday 6th Feb, 2009

Hi Hannah, really happy for feedback, do email me with your thoughts. Thanks, Amy

By Amy Stock on Tuesday 10th Feb, 2009

Hi. Really pleased to see an assembly section but disappointed that there is a charge. I do primary assemblies and have no facilities for powerpoints etc. Because of this I wouldn’t buy an assembly that I hadn’t at least seen first as I may find that it was all not appropriate and I had wasted my money. If they were free I would maybe at least be able to use them for inspiration for something I can develop to suit the junior school.

By Jean Ranson on Wednesday 11th Feb, 2009

Hi, thanks for your comments, this is part of a useful process for us and we want to know your thoughts. I took on board your thought Jean about needing more detail and have added some more information to the description. At the moment we only have a secondary school assembly available but in the near future we hope to expand this area to include primary resources. For now, some great primary material for the Easter season can be found here. It was written for Easter last year, but is really good stuff. Do email further if you’d like to follow up on any questions you have. Thanks, Amy

By Amy Stock on Thursday 12th Feb, 2009

Hi. Can I wade in here as one of the team helping run the site. The challenge we have is figuring out how to run the project on something other than thin air. Right now it costs, not surprisingly, quite a bit to keep it rolling. We’re always going to offer 99.9% of it free, because it’s about mission and ministry and our passion is to make a difference. But we’re also trying to figure out ways of developing income other than filling the site with banner ads from Google. Having a section where there are a few resources (that have taken someone considerable time and effort to write!) seems like a good experiment, especially if it’s only £1.99. I’ve just bought a coffee from the shop down the road for more than that this morning! So please bear with us while we work out how to make this project work in the long term and, if you really believe in what we’re doing, hit the ‘make a donation’ button at the bottom of the page and join us in making this site the best possible resource, inspiration and support for Christians working in schools!!

By Chris Curtis on Friday 13th Feb, 2009

Is the fee going to be for assemblies developed by the schoolswork.co.uk team only? What about a way to have outline ideas shared by site users available free through the blogs, with additional resources available for purchase if people want full plans rather than ideas?  Then we as users choose to ‘donate’ our resources to help meet the costs of the site.
Ideally, I guess, if we all donated there wouldn’t need to be any fees at all.

By Wendy Swan on Tuesday 17th Feb, 2009

Thanks Wendy. Although this is an interesting way of doing it, it’s actually really helpful to work through this issue in the community and wrestle with the best ways of keeping this going. We’re passionate about supporting people, developing stuff that will be useful and also for providing space for us all to learn from each other. Like Chris says, we just are trying to think long term and need to make this project sustainable. We are looking at other ways to share ideas and generate resources for the site, most of which we will offer without charge. Bear with us as we figure out how to best serve you!

By Amy Stock on Tuesday 17th Feb, 2009

Thank you for the resource, as always inspirational and very helpful :)

By Simb on Sunday 22nd Feb, 2009

Looks like a great use of money when I need fresh ideas, thank you…

By Ruth Bennett on Monday 23rd Feb, 2009

£1.99 surely won’t break any banks (even in credit crunch Britain) - and if Chris had wanted he could have quoted Luke 10:7.

Just a personal plea - isn’t £2 a bit more honest? Or is there a reason it has to be .99??

By froudie on Monday 23rd Feb, 2009

Hi Froudie, good question. I guess we were inspired by the Proost model who set their resources at £1.99 per download.

By Amy Stock on Monday 23rd Feb, 2009

£1.99 guys! Great value, this site costs a fortune to run so please don’t moan. Use your expenses!

By Lee Jackson on Tuesday 3rd Mar, 2009

I understand the need to make some money, but I think the charge cuts against the spirit of the site where people share ideas for free. It’s not a huge charge but I don’t think I will buy the resource as I think there will be several free offers from other users. Call it a protest if you like, but I would not normally charge people for my own resources, although I might ask for a favour one day. Perhaps you should make £1.99 a ‘suggested donation’ leaving it up to the individual to pay or not. So many Christian websites are focussed on flogging new resources, someone’s dvd or new life changing book. Please don’t go down that route.

By Richard Taylor on Monday 16th Mar, 2009

Hi Richard,

Do you know how much it costs a year to run this website?

Amy could you enlighten us?

Lee

By Lee Jackson on Monday 16th Mar, 2009

Hi Lee,

I have no idea how much it costs but I am grateful for the free services it provides.

By Richard Taylor on Monday 16th Mar, 2009

Seriously - people are upset that the assemblies cost £1.99? Are we taking into account that to be a member of schoolswork.co.uk is free in the first place? If you look at any assembly guides elsewhere on the net, I guarantee that you’ll struggle to find a) a resource that is free or cheaper than £1.99 (most are more expensive) or b) find an assembly resource that’s as good quality and well put together. With all the time and effort that has been poured into providing a resource that’s here to save us time, I don’t think that £1.99 is asking much is it really? You could spend 2 hours on google finding resources or you could get quality here now - and spend those 2 hours in school with young people - bit of a simple decision surely?!

By Tom Wade on Monday 16th Mar, 2009

Thanks everyone for your comments…I genuinely want to listen to them all. In answer to your question Lee, it does cost a lot to keep this project running. This year costs are just over 20k, and next year we’re looking to develop the team to increase the efficiency of the project, taking the costs to between more like 40-50k. This involves upkeep of the site, web developments, training we’re developing (this is really exciting by the way), staff and a whole host of other costs, which until you run a project like this, have no idea that exist. Charging £1.99 per resource isn’t going to impact greatly on the overall costs just yet, but even from the first couple of resources we’ve put on here, we’ve been able to pay for a few more hours of our web designer’s precious time to add some more features that will hopefully make this site more useful and effective for you.

Hope that helps!

By Amy Stock on Monday 16th Mar, 2009

Thanks Amy, keep up the good work :)

£1.99 is less than a latte in St. Arbucks mmmmm food for thought

By Lee Jackson on Tuesday 17th Mar, 2009

Hi, I am really grateful for this website!! Keep up this amazing work!! I would be happy to pay anything for your ideas, they are always up to date, and modern and well presented, which shows how much time goes into them!! I sometimes get stuck and have offen been inspired by an ide from here even though I do primary assemblies, the ideas can be adapted slightly for a younger age.  God bless you in your work.
