“she tie-jacked me”

...so my definition of tie-jacking, for those of you wondering, involves yanking down as hard as you can on someone’s tie, reducing their once ‘cool’ big knot to an incredibly tight small knot and making it incredibly dangerous as well as almost impossible for them to then untie the knot and free themselves. Needless to say part of our conversation involved me undoing these ridiculous little knots and trying to get to the bottom of how it all began.

There did seem to be an air of fear around the new year 7s about bullying and one little girl even asked me to accompany her to the water fountain to get a drink as she was too scared to go on her own. I think some students come into secondary school with an inbuilt fear that they will be bullied. It’s saddening to realise this, but also highlights the responsibility for those of us working in schools to help alleviate fear and make the school environment a safer place to be.

Hope was restored this lunchtime when the girls came to an agreement that this probably wasn’t the best way to have fun and apologies started being passed round. I really hope this isn’t something that will catch on. Another reminder here about the new beatbullying site. worth a look in if bullying is an issue you’re needing support with or want to recommend a good site for a young person to use.

It’s called “peanuting” at my school and happens in just the same way, starts as a bit of fun, but can get nasty. Teaching staff stamp on it very quickly at start of the year.
I haven’t had to undo any knots so far this term! But give it a few more days!

Peanuting was around when I was at school and can definately be either lighthearted fun (although the knot does take ages to undo and usually requires scissors) or a malicious action. Regardless of what it is meant to be - I think it is how the person on the recieving end interprets it that is important - and its never nice to be peanutted… The school that I worked at last year had an on the spot detention for anyone caught doing such an action - I wonder how long it will be before other schools start doing a similar thing
