Positive change

So in the book ‘Contemplative Youth Ministry: Practicing the Presence of Jesus with Young People’ , Yaconelli talks about how every youth group has this one kid who is there to build patience.

I have two, and I know who they are… straight away I can picture them in my head. A boy and a girl, often at loggerheads with each other. It’s fair to say that in the last year this lad has upset most people in some way (leaders and other young people alike) but he has the biggest heart and I think he is a total legend.

He’s seen by a lot of people I think as destructive, rude and angry. But there is so much more to him than that and lately the positivity has been shining through a lot more.  I’m not gonna be too detailed cos it wouldnt be fair on him - i haven’t asked him to share

He really made my day today.  Instead of stories today of fights and being drunk and other crazy antics he said 2 things that made me over the moon.

First up he’s won an award. Now this is a really big award and it blew me away when I heard about it and where the ceremony was going to be.  Ok, so some people win awards all the time, but for him I feel it will be such a boost.

Secondly, angry boy seems to be going…yes!! He was talking about an incident where some other kids started on him. I thought I was going to hear about another big fight but he told us he walked away.  HE WALKED away. I’m still in shock.I know i’m supposed to be the sensible grown up here, but if a group of people had treated me the way they treated them I would have wanted to batter them (but obviously wouldnt!). He walked away.

So just an encouragement to everyone who might have had a hard day (or week, or month, or year, or longer…) change happens. It might be very slow and not always as radical as you would like to see…but it happens and it takes a while for the radical changes that happen inside someone to work there way out…at different rates.

Have a happy day today people.
