Mental Health is often a subject which is not openly talked about, well not comfortably anyway. It’s something that’s often joked about or dealt with too sensitively in order not to offend.
Sunday Night Surgery a couple of weeks ago, on the other hand looked at mental illness in a very open and honest manner, asking and answering lots of questions and giving permission for this to be talked about.
It’s something 1 in 4 of us will face and I really found this documentary interesting, helpful and think it will be a great tool to use with young people.
I really don’t like soaps, but i do have to (reluctantly!) agree that they are often a way of raising issues within public conciousness. This is the case with this topic and the producer cleverly used a character known to many tv watching teens - Newt from Hollyoaks - to introduce it.
Experiences of the young people are at times quite difficult to listen to , but still need to be listened to and explored with young people.
I’m eagerly awaiting the launch of selfharm.co.uk which will assist with some of the issues raised in the documentary.
