The Passion

As I was watching tonight and reflecting on so many people up and down the country with different backgrounds and beliefs also watching this account of Jesus’ journey in Jerusalem, a few things struck me. A couple I will mention here.

Jesus says a couple of lines near the start that stood out to me: ” I promise you, before this week is over, you’ll know God in a way you never knew before….if you want to know God, you trust in him, like a child taking his father’s hand”  Does anyone know whether the writers and producers of this series are Christian?

Also the part of Joseph of Arimathea played by David Oyelowo (of Spooks) is very convincing. The way he describes Jesus’ words as beautiful in the temple courts inspires discussion among the others to agree that indeed here is someone who speaks beautifully, and I read up on the actor and it turns out he is a committed Christian. Oyelowo is very vocal about his Christian faith and has said, “For me, there are three important things in my life - God first, family second, and work third, in that order.” He talks about taking the part: “I read the script with a slightly sceptical eye and, to my delight, I recognised it as the story and events that have shaped my life for the last 15 years.”

It will be really interesting to see how it develops as the week goes on. Mention it to teachers, grab a chat in the staff room about it, ask your young people what they think.

The Bible Society is producing a pack of educational materials to accompany the series for use in schools, churches and adult education.  It will be available later on this year, but see what it’s all about here.
