I regularly see 2 groups of teenagers, but also lots on a 1 to 1 basis. The majority of these young people have no “huge” issues, and are not from a Christian background. A lot of the problems stem from lack of self esteem, confidence and anger management!
I spend a lot of time letting them talk and simply giving them that time, but now I feel I need some structure to the sessions.
Any books or websites that might be helpful? (I’ve just read the art of mentoring by Mike Pegg but far too business orientated).
Thanks for your help in advance,
Andrea
as a mentoring tool, the blob tree stuff from Pip Wilson is excellent - would recommend it to anyone
Sharon Prior and Matt Summerfield have just published a book called Kinetic – Mentoring Young People for Leadership, which is available from Urban Saints.
Ruth Hassall from CPAS has also just published a book called Growing Young Leaders with BRF. Both are aimed at working with Christian young people but I’m sure lots of the ideas are transferable.
We’re doing some mentoring training this year which may be helpful. Have a look at http://www.mentoringtraining.org.uk - there’ll be more events added soon
Hi Andrea, a fab book is ‘Draw on Your Emotions’ by Margot Sutherland and Philip Engleheart. See it on Amazon here. It’s not cheap, but is the best thing I’ve used in mentoring situations…using picture exercises to help YP express their emotions through drawing. It includes ‘Your Life’, ‘Who Are You?’, ‘Your Feelings’, ‘Things Which Can Make Life Difficult’, ‘The Good Things in Life’, ‘Feelings About Places’, ‘Feelings About Other People’.
