Lent assembly tomorrow

Late last night I got an email from a head of year asking me to do an assembly tomorrow. This is fine, assemblies in this particular school are few and far between so I accepted gladly. In preparation for this, I took a cow’s tongue out of the freezer this morning (a normal object every schoolsworker should have in their freezer!) to use in my assembly. However, it only dawned on me this afternoon that it is in fact pancake day tomorrow. And, after all the excitement of the Lent Assembly (!), it hadn’t even occurred to me to use this assembly myself, until now.

So, I’m just adding the detail, but will be using the Lent Assembly tomorrow and really looking forward to it (you’ll be glad to know I also paid to download it! I find it much easier to access things online, and the way this system does it makes my life a lot easier). Due to the wonder of modern technology, I’ve also been emailing the head of year this evening, and she was even so obliging as to photograph the inside of her fridge for me and email me the pic! So, this proves it is doable with a day’s notice.

Oh and the story I’m adding at the end leads me to share about a fab thing Tearfund are doing. At the end of the assembly, there is an opportunity to say what is important to you in this season and how you are going to mark it (whether that be giving something up, or making more time for something else - e.g. friendship, prayer, doing something special for someone else each day). I have decided to join Tearfund’s Carbon Fast 2009 challenge, and for each day in Lent they encourage you to think about doing something different to help reduce your carbon footprint. (E.g. take out one lightbulb from your house and don’t use it for the whole of Lent, reducing the paper you use, specific prayer points and loads of creative ideas for each day), so I will share that with Year 9 tomorrow and why it’s important to me. Love the little videos they put together on this page!

Will let you know how it goes. The tongue is back in the freezer anyway, until next time.

Assembly went well. The Yr 9s were very hyper, but they settled well and engaged with the message that I shared. I made a bit more of the end section than I had originally planned, making the most of their engagement with the car pictures. They connected well with the idea that when we’re not thinking about where we’re going or ‘looking up’ that we will trip and fall and find ourselves in situations we hadn’t intended. I went down the road of ‘you didn’t mean to shout at your mum, you didn’t mean to spread that rumour, you didn’t mean to lose your temper in class, you didn’t mean to betray your friend…..you just didn’t think about what you were doing or where you were going with it…’, I encouraged them to take time to look up. Lent is a time Christians look up to God, who are you looking up to?
